Zhautas pre-mortem
Apr. 24th, 2019 04:43 pmThere are two things I'd like people to take away from Zhautas as they move forward with their lives:
1) When someone says a racial slur in front of you, tell them not to do that.
2) Don't blame players for being harassed while letting their harasser off the hook.
Specifically, this is the bare minimum treatment that you should expect from your mod team. Sadly, in Zhautas, we did not get either of these. I have seen and heard a lot of stories over the past few weeks about players leaving the game because their harassment complaints were minimized, ignored, or otherwise mishandled.
In my case, when I would not play out a ship in exactly the way another player wanted, she asked the mods for mediation. I declined and cut off contact, leading her to start a spiral in which she haunted the plurks of mutual friends, tried to get CR with my CR, and finally told one of my friends that she was in regular contact with the mods because she believed I was telling people not to play with her. (I was not.) Multiple mod complaints about her conduct went nowhere, and one of them never even got a response.
The mod team's tendency to enable bad behavior has, unfortunately, not been limited to game matters. They have also exhibited silence in the face of racist slurs being used in gen chat by a helper mod (Harley), and responded to my concerns about racist language in DWRP spaces with derailing.
There will be naming of names, recommended reading, and oh, there will be caps. So let's dive in! Before we go too much further, content warning for anti-black racism, misogynist slurs, and fictional domestic violence.
( Content warnings: Racist slurs, misogynist slurs, gaslighting, mentions of domestic violence in a fictional context. )
Special thanks to Adiva, without whom these sections would not have snarky titles. And of course, to everybody who provided caps, offered resource links, allowed me to cite their experiences, and proofread this psotdhgs.
